Deric is currently seeking an Automation Designer to join our team in Burlington, Ontario!
Deric is a general contractor specializing in civil
works, deep foundations, process mechanics, power supply, instrumentation and
control, industrial maintenance, and automation. Our achievements include water and wastewater
treatment plants, civil and infrastructure works, process mechanics,
automation, instrumentation and control, electrical power, formwork and
concreting, port facilities and more.
Reporting to the Director, the Automation
Designer will have the following main responsibilities:
1. Working with and/or exposed to a wide variety of electrical equipment,
including but not limited to:
- Automation equipment (PLC’s) from major suppliers such as Rockwell,
Schneider, Siemens;
- Variable Frequency Drives from major suppliers such as Rockwell,
Schneider, Siemens, ABB or others;
- SCADA or HMI equipment from major suppliers;
- Motor control equipment;
- Process Instrumentation;
- Automation networks (Ethernet/IP, Modbus TCP, ProfiNet, etc.);
- Power distribution equipment (MV & LV systems);
2. Working for an EPC, systems integrator or an equipment
manufacturer in technical expert/lead roles, and roles with project management
responsibilities.
3. The ability
to undertake all tasks necessary for the successful completion of the project,
including, but not limited to:
- Prepare budget/cost estimates for small to medium scale projects,
including estimated amount of labour required;
- Prepare functional specifications to describe the control system;
- Prepare and/or review technical specifications for specific equipment;
- Prepare and/or review bid documents – documents to allow the client or
the construction group to go out for bid;
- Generate bill of materials and orders from drawings and documents;
- Interface with suppliers to obtain quotes and pricing information;
- Design work – act as lead engineer and guide design resources or
directly generate electrical schematics, panel layouts, network architectures
(and other design documents) using CAD software (EPLAN or AutoCAD) and
Microsoft Office products;
- Programming – act as lead engineer and guide resources or directly
program PLC’s, HMI’s and any other equipment that requires programming or
configuration;
- Provide guidance to construction trades during the installation process,
reviewing work, generating schedules and monitoring progress of activities on
site;
- Provide guidance to technical resources or directly lead commissioning
activities on site, as the need arises.
Qualifications
:
- 5 to 7 years of experience in a similar role ;
- Post secondary degree in Systems designs, Automation, Electrical or
engineering science ;
- Eager to learn about automation ;
- Great capacity to analyze situations and solve problems ;
- Experience on working site would be an asset ;
- The candidates’ work experience must be in heavy industry (steel,
cement, paper, mining, material handling) or manufacturing (automotive,
packaging);
- Have good communications skills; be able to communicate effectively with
colleagues, contractors and clients alike.
- Have a healthy dose of curiosity and perceptiveness, keeping an eye out
for possible opportunities for the client to save energy, manpower, and reduce
down time.
- Have some solid experience with designing automation systems (control
through PLCs, HMIs, VFDs, hydraulics, etc.).
- Have some solid experience with debugging/troubleshooting/commissioning
automation systems. This would include being able to travel to client locations
for the day or days at a time, when required.
- Have some experience managing projects (working with the client,
contractor(s), and suppliers.
